What Happened When I Quit Instagram for Summer: Teacher Biz Growth Without Social Media
It’s confession time! In this episode of the Teacher Biz Podcast, Heather gets real about what happened when she completely stepped back from Instagram and social media over the summer.
Spoiler: Her business didn’t fall apart—in fact, the results might surprise you!
Letting Go of the “Always-On” Instagram Hustle
This summer, I made a confession-worthy decision: I stopped posting on Instagram.
Yes, the same account where I had consistently shared a reel every single day through the spring. For months, I dedicated at least six hours each week to brainstorming, filming, editing, batching, and uploading content. My efforts were strategic—I used short-form video and keyword-driven reels, inviting viewers to comment for a DM that linked straight to my free resource.
Instagram was working for me. It brought in leads, it validated content for my Facebook ads, and it made me feel visible. But summer arrived, my kids came home, and my priorities shifted. I work far less when school’s out (if you’re a regular listener, you know this about me).
The reality: those six hours each week became a trade-off I wasn’t willing to make.
The Surprising Results of Stepping Back
Here’s what might surprise you: my business didn’t fall apart.
Not a single follower demanded to know where my daily reels had gone. The Instagram “machine” didn’t stop, even though I pressed pause. Why? Because I’d built a solid foundation elsewhere.
My best-performing reels kept running as ads, generating a steady flow of new leads—albeit at a modest 1.5x return on ad spend (ROAS). Even at that rate, bringing in high-quality leads meant I could justify reducing my social presence, secure in the knowledge that my business engine was still humming in the background.
Above all, I shifted my focus to where the real ROI lives: email marketing and direct list-building. My attention went to nurturing my email lists, running strategic sales, and delivering a new membership mentorship program.
The impact? Steady income, stronger relationships, and zero burnout.
Why Email Marketing Remains My Superpower
If you take just one thing from my experience, let it be this: email is the most powerful tool you have as an online business owner.
Unlike fickle algorithms or vanishing viral reels, your email list is yours to own and nurture. Emails land in inboxes directly, resist the shifting sands of social media trends, and consistently deliver higher conversion rates for digital product sales.
Some of my best sales days have come not from a splashy Instagram moment, but from a thoughtful email to my audience.
Building a strong evergreen funnel—a freebie that seamlessly introduces new subscribers to a small, tailored offer—creates the freedom and flexibility to step back when needed, knowing your business won’t skip a beat.
Finding Your Right Balance and Giving Yourself Permission
Burnout is real, especially if you’re trying to juggle complex content calendars, family life, and meaningful business growth. I’ve been there—and learned the hard way that overextending on social media isn’t sustainable.
Today, I feel no pressure to be “always on.” Social media will remain a part of my strategy, but it’s not the end-all, be-all.
If you’re thinking about scaling back, or you’re not seeing the results you want from Instagram, consider redirecting your energy into nurturing your email list and building out your foundational funnels.
Trust me: your business (and your well-being) will thank you.
If you’ve been feeling social media burnout, or just want permission to take a break, let this be your sign. With the right systems (especially email and a strong freebie funnel), you don’t have to be everywhere, all the time.
As we head into back-to-school season, I’m excited to pick up social again on my own terms. But I’m keeping these lessons close—focus on what really works, and give yourself grace for seasonal slowdowns!
